Starting a two-show run at the Township Auditorium with a scorching “Holden Oversoul” certainly set the tone for Widespread Panic’s return to Columbia, SC, but the band didn’t step off the gas, tearing through a strong first set with a sweet “Smokestack Lightning > Chest Fever.”

“Travelin’ Man > Vacation” was about the only respite from the rock in the second set, with “Heroes” getting things cranked back up and dropping into a huge “Impossible.” “Pleas > Mr. Soul” was very, very nice, and the encore – “Expiration Day” and “Action Man” – was the perfect way to close it.

Night two started much the way its predecessor did, with “Travelin’ Light” hot out of the gate. Todd sang a great version of “Down,” and “Walk On” appeared on the set list for the first time since The Tabernacle during last year’s Wood tour.

The second set was one you write home about. “Tall Boy > Hatfield > Sewing Machine” to open, short pause in and out of “Tickle the Truth,” but after that it was off to the races with “Stop-Go > Genesis, Happy > Airplane > Let's Get The Show On The Road > Postcard.” The “Quarter Tank” and “Zoo” were just gas on the fire.

    2013 Wanee Music Festival

Day two for Widespread Panic at Wanee was a study in contrasts.

While Friday was plagued by rain and heavy winds, giving the road and stage crews fits trying to keep the band’s gear dry and operational, Saturday was a blue-bell day with sunny skies and the occasional cool breeze, which likely contributed to the laid-back vibe backstage. The legendary Leon Russell played a fantastic set early in the day, and the guys mingled all afternoon, catching up with family and friends in other bands all afternoon before taking the stage after a scorching set from the Tedeschi Trucks Band.

To these ears, Saturday’s set seemed much more relaxed. Without the stress of the inclement weather, the band settled in right off the bat, opening with a thunderous “Imitation Leather Shoes.” The band has found a groove with “Cotton Was King,” seemingly knocking it out of the park each time it’s dialed up this spring tour. “Bust It Big” > “Jack” > “Love Tractor” was a nice three-song run before the “City of Dreams” sing-a-long.

Since Warren Haynes and Danny Louis from Gov’t Mule guested on night one, the guys brought out Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks to sit in on night two. “I’ve Been Workin’” segued straight out of a funky “Rebirtha” jam, giving J.B. an opportunity to trade vocals with Susan as Jimmy and Derek traded licks. “Goin’ Out West” was where the two golden-haired guitar slingers shined, playing a nifty game of call and response that led into Sunny and Todd’s drum breakdown that intros “Fishwater.” 12 train days…
