Home shows can be double-edged swords.
They provide an opportunity for the band to catch up with family and old friends,
but they also disrupt the normal day-to-day routine of the tour and often come loaded
with expectations: for certain songs, special guests, or outrageous bustouts. Musical
transcendence, nothing less.
Despite all this, Widespread Panic absolutely rose the occasion this weekend at
Alpharetta’s Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, delivering two incredible nights of music
that arguably set the high-water mark for the spring tour.
First sets of multi-night runs can sometimes feel like musical jumping jacks as the
band warms up the stage and gets acclimated to the acoustics of the room, but the old-
school trio of “Send Your Mind, Glory, Space Wrangler” was an apropos opener to the
festivities in Alpharetta and certainly a sign of things to come. Second set was hot from
the first notes of “Little Kin,” with the set dividing into two long segues back-to-back:
“One Arm Steve > Bust It Big > Sell Sell > Machine > Barstools and Dreamers” and
“Driving Song > Arleen > Driving Song > Breathing Slow > Pigeons.” “Old Joe” is a
great first song of an encore, giving the crowd a short respite before the drums kicked in
for “Disco.” “Red Hot Mama” brought the whole thing to a fever pitch, sending everyone
home happy.
“Parsons” was the perfect opener for night two, picking the energy right up where it
left off the night before with “Red Hot Mama.” Nice transition between “Wonderin’ >
Sleeping Man,” giving Schools a shot at the microphone, but it was the dark to darker to
darkest run of “Aunt Avis” to “Chilly Water” that made this first set stand out.
Set two was more of the same, beginning with a scorching take on Jerry Joseph’s “North”
into a sublime “Jack.” “Diner > Surprise Valley > I’m Not Alone > Surprise Valley >
Drums > Fishwater” was as classic Panic as it comes, with “Ain’t Life Grand” being the
cherry on top. Fans have mentioned the noticeable absence of “Porch Song” from the
setlists on the spring tour to date, so to get it as the third encore on a “The Take Out >
Pilgrims > Porch Song” triple-bagger was almost over-the-top.
